Heartfelt

My love, The tulips have been on my desk all week, and I smile every time I look up from my screen. Thank you for remembering that I love the striped ones, and for turning an ordinary Tuesday into something worth celebrating. All my love, Claire

My darling, Fifteen years in and you still manage to surprise me. The necklace with the tiny compass is beautiful, and I have not taken it off since you fastened it at breakfast. Thank you for still planning, still noticing and still choosing us. Yours, Maren

Dear Lou, Thank you for the Valentine's breakfast in bed. The pancakes were shaped like hearts, mostly, and you remembered I like my coffee with too much cream. Thirty-two years, and you still bring the tray up the stairs. All my love, Ann

Warm

Dear Ben, The reservation at the little Italian place on Fourth was perfect, the tiramisu was better than the one in Rome, and the card you wrote caught me off guard in the best way. Thank you for putting so much thought into the night. I felt celebrated. Love, Ivy
Partner who planned a date Personalize
Dear Theo, Thank you for the homemade dinner on Valentine's. You made the mushroom risotto from our first date, burned the garlic bread and served it anyway, and lit every candle in the house. It was the best night out we have ever had, and we never left the kitchen. Love you, Nina
Partner who cooked at home Personalize
Dear Sam, Thank you for the flowers and the note. We have only been seeing each other for a few weeks, so I was not expecting anything, and the bunch of ranunculus on my doorstep made my whole day. Dinner Saturday is on me. Warmly, Leah
Someone new Personalize
Dear Mom and Dad, Thank you for the Valentine's box in the mail. The conversation hearts, the socks with the little dogs and Dad's handwritten card all made it to my dorm in one piece. I miss you both. Love, Priya

Dear Grandma, Thank you for the valentine with the five-dollar bill inside. You have sent one every year since I was born, and I keep them all in a shoebox. I am saving this one for a book. Love, Eli

Dear Room 12 families, Thank you for the valentines, the cookies and the card the class signed for me. I read every note at my kitchen table, and the one that said "you are nice even when we are loud" is going on my desk. Warmly, Ms. Ford

Dear Ruth, Thank you for the Valentine's card and the jar of your lemon curd. It was lovely to come home to it on my porch, and the curd is already half gone over toast. Happy Valentine's Day to you too. Warmly, Helen

Dear Marcus, Happy Valentine's Day from three time zones away. Thank you for the playlist, the video call at midnight your time and the box of chocolates that arrived exactly on the 14th. Eight more weeks until we are in the same city. Love, Tess

Casual

Dear Anna, You are proof that Valentine's Day does not require a date to be wonderful. Thank you for the chocolate-covered pretzels and the ridiculous card with the sloth on it, which is now on my refrigerator. You are my favorite Galentine. Love you, Becca
Close friend, Galentine's Personalize
Dear Galentines, Thank you for brunch on Saturday, the heart-shaped waffles and three hours of the best conversation I have had all winter. Every one of you showed up despite the snow, so let's book the same table next year. Love, Jo

Dear Ms. Carver, Thank you for the Valentine's party and for helping every kid make a mailbox out of a shoebox. Mine has a dinosaur on it. I liked the cookies with the pink frosting. Love, Nico

Text to a partner Personalize

To thank someone for a valentine, name the gift or gesture, say one thing about it that you loved, and close with love. Two or three sentences is enough. For a partner, saying it in person or in a text that day covers it; for a grandparent, a far-away friend or a teacher’s class, a short card is warmer.

Thanking a partner or spouse

Valentine’s gifts from a partner tend to carry a private reference: the flower you mentioned once, the restaurant from your first date, the song. The thank-you works when it shows you caught it. “Thank you for the striped tulips” is good, and “thank you for remembering I love the striped ones” is better. For a long marriage, thank them for still planning and still noticing. Our husband and wife thank-you pages have more for the rest of the year.

If they cooked, planned a date or arranged something at home, thank the effort as well as the result, burned garlic bread included.

Someone new

Early in a relationship, keep the thanks warm and light, and match the size of the gesture. A bunch of flowers after a few weeks calls for a happy text or a short note, and an offer to plan the next date is a natural follow-up.

Galentine’s Day and friends

Valentine’s from friends, a Galentine’s brunch or a card from a roommate deserves a playful thank-you. Name the card or treat, mention the brunch or the night out, and suggest doing it again next year.

Family, kids and classrooms

Grandparents and parents who mail a valentine every year should get a thank-you that mentions the tradition. For kids, a one-line card with a drawing is enough. Teachers who receive class valentines can send one note home to all the families, and a child can write a short thank-you to the teacher or room parent who ran the party.

Coworkers and neighbors

A box of chocolates in the break room or a card from a neighbor calls for a light thank-you the same day: a message to the team, or a note on the neighbor’s door. Keep it casual and name what they left.

Short lines and texts

For a text or a small card, one detail is enough: the roses on the kitchen table, the note in your coat pocket, the playlist. For flowers in particular, our thank you for the flowers page has more.

Common questions

Do you need to send a thank-you for a Valentine's Day gift?

Not in a formal sense. For a partner, thanking them in person, and naming what you loved about the gift, is enough. A written note is a nice extra for a gift that took real planning, and it is a good idea for a gift from someone who is not with you, like a grandparent or a far-away friend.

What do you write in a Valentine's Day thank-you note?

Name the gift or the gesture, say one thing about it that you loved (the flower they remembered, the meal they cooked, the card), and close with love. Two or three sentences is plenty.

What do you say when you did not get your partner anything in return?

Keep it honest and warm. Thank them for the gift specifically, say how it made you feel, and skip the long explanation. A plan of your own for later in the week is a kind follow-up.

How should kids thank someone for a valentine?

A young child can say what the valentine was and one thing they liked about it, with a drawing. For a class party, a single card from the child to the teacher or the class parent who organized it is enough.

How does a teacher thank a class for Valentine's gifts?

One note to all the families, sent home or by email, that mentions the cards, any treats and one line from a child's card if it made you smile.

Is a text enough to say thank you for a valentine?

For a partner or a close friend, yes, especially the same day. For a grandparent or someone who mailed a gift, a card or a call is warmer.
