Heartfelt

Dear Hollis, Thank you for the anniversary roses. Twelve years, twelve deep red garden roses, and a note in your terrible handwriting that I have now read about forty times. They are on the dining table where we ate our first takeout dinner in this house. All my love, Ada

Dear Mom, Thank you for the peonies on Mother's Day. It is a little funny to be the one receiving flowers from you, but you said a new mom deserves them too, and you were right. I pressed one of the petals in the baby book next to his footprints. Love, Abby

Dear Gus, Thank you for the tulips on Mother's Day, and for remembering the yellow ones. You have been bringing me yellow tulips since you were nine and spent your allowance at the corner market, and every year they make me smile the same way. Love, Mom

Dear Uncle Dario, Thank you for the flowers you brought to opening night. I could see you in the fourth row holding them through the whole second act, and the stargazer lilies made my dressing room smell wonderful for the rest of the run. With love, Clara

Dear Gwen, Thank you for the flowers you sent for Mom's service. The white lilies stood beside her photo at the front of the chapel, and several people asked who sent them. Your kindness brought our family comfort. With love, Eitan

Warm

Dear Aunt Greta, Thank you for the birthday flowers. The pink ranunculus opened a little more every day this week, and I moved the vase from the kitchen to my nightstand so they would be the first thing I saw in the morning. You remembered they were my favorite, which made them even better. With love, Bianca
Birthday flowers from a relative Personalize
Dear Bea and Felix, Thank you for the flowers you sent to the hospital when Gabriel was born. The nurses put the white tulips on the windowsill, and they were in the background of his first photos. We brought them home with us and they lasted almost a week longer. With love and sleepy thanks, Dana and Ezra
New baby flowers at the hospital Personalize
Dear Celia, Thank you for the sunflowers. They arrived the day after my knee surgery, when I was stuck on the couch feeling sorry for myself, and it is hard to stay grumpy with six sunflowers staring at you. I am off the crutches now and walking a little farther each day. Warmly, Harriet

Dear Dmitri, Thank you for the Valentine's flowers. I know you think red roses are predictable, so the bunch of anemones and sweet peas surprised me in the best way. They are on the bathroom counter, which I realize is an odd spot, but I see them every time I get ready. Love, Elena

Dear Caleb, Thank you for the just-because flowers on Tuesday. There was no birthday, no apology and no reason at all, and that is what made the bunch of grocery-store alstroemeria the best thing that happened to me that week. They are still going strong on the windowsill. Love you, Fiona

Hi Emmett, Thank you for the flowers after the spring recital. Esme was so proud to be handed a bouquet of her own like the older dancers, and she has carried the pink carnations from room to room all weekend. She asked me to tell you she did the turn without falling. Thanks, Gemma

Dear Felicity, Thank you for the lavender from your garden. I tied the bundle upside down in the pantry to dry, and the whole kitchen smells like your backyard in June. Warmly, Alma

Dear Grandpa Bernard, Thank you for the dahlias you cut from your garden for my birthday. The big burgundy one is as wide as my hand, and Dad says it is the same kind you grew when he was little. I am going to save the tubers if you show me how. Love, Daria

Dear Book Club Ladies, Thank you for the bouquet you sent when I was in the hospital. The pale yellow roses and baby's breath sat on my tray table for five days, and the nurses kept stopping to admire them. I will be back on the third Thursday with a dessert to make up for the missed meetings. With thanks, Beatrice

Came home to the most beautiful bunch of ranunculus and a card from my sister Harper. Thank you for remembering my birthday from 2,000 miles away. They are on the mantel and I keep walking past them on purpose.

Dear Ben, Thank you for the hydrangeas you brought to the shower. I put them in Grandma's old milk-glass vase, and they were the centerpiece of the gift table all afternoon. One of the blooms is drying on the bookshelf now so I can keep it. With love, Adele

Funny

Dear Frances, Thank you for the orchid. I was nervous because I have killed every houseplant I have ever owned, but your instructions to water it with three ice cubes a week have worked so far. It is blooming on the bookshelf, and I am a little proud of both of us. Warmly, Delia

Casual

Dear Grace, Thank you for the flowers you sent to celebrate the new job. The orange gerbera daisies are on my desk at the new office, and everyone who walks past asks who they are from. I tell them about you, of course. Thanks so much, Hana

Dear Bruno, Thank you for the peace lily you brought to our housewarming. It already looks at home in the corner by the front window, and it has outlasted the basil I bought the same week. Thanks again, Annika and Colin

Hi Hector, Thank you for the flowers you sent to my office on Thursday. The receptionist carried them all the way back to my desk, and half the floor came by to read the card. The purple lisianthus are holding up well, and I am taking them home for the weekend. Love, Bethany

To thank someone for flowers, name what they sent, say where you put them, and tell them one thing they did for you (brightened the hospital room, made a nervous first day easier). Two or three sentences is plenty. Send a text or call the day they arrive so the sender knows the delivery made it, then follow with a card for a big arrangement, a business gift or flowers sent during an illness.

Name the flowers and where they went

The best detail in a flower thank-you is what happened to the flowers after they arrived. They went in Grandma’s milk-glass vase, on the nightstand, on the hospital windowsill, in the lobby where clients see them. One petal got pressed in the baby book. That small picture lets the sender see their gift in your home, which a card from a florist cannot show them.

If you know the variety, name it: peonies, ranunculus, stargazer lilies, sunflowers. If you do not, the color and size are enough.

A photo makes a good thank-you

When you text or message your thanks, include a picture of the flowers in place. If they ordered online, they may never have seen what the florist sent. A photo of the bouquet on your kitchen table shows them, and it makes a short text feel complete.

Flowers for a birthday, anniversary or just because

Flowers from a partner or close friend call for a warm, personal reply. Mention the occasion and anything they remembered, like your favorite color or the flowers from your wedding. A just-because bunch deserves a thank-you as much as an anniversary bouquet, and you can say so. For a Valentine’s bouquet, our Valentine’s Day thank-you wording has more romantic notes.

Get-well and new baby flowers

When flowers arrive during a hospital stay or recovery, thank the sender once you are home, and tell them how you are doing. A line about where the flowers sat (the tray table, the windowsill) helps them picture you there. New parents can mention the baby by name and whether the flowers came home from the hospital. Our get-well thank-you wording covers the meals, visits and cards that often come at the same time.

Plants, orchids and garden flowers

A potted orchid, a peace lily or a bundle of lavender from someone’s garden is a longer-lasting gift, and you can report back on it later. Telling a friend their orchid is still blooming two months on is a second thank-you they will enjoy. For flowers someone grew and cut themselves, mention the garden.

Flowers at work and from clients

For flowers from coworkers for a promotion, a new job or a hard week, send one note or email to the group and a personal word to whoever organized it. For a business sending flowers to a client, or a client sending them to you, keep the note formal and short, mention where the arrangement is displayed, and sign from a named person. If flowers came with another gift, our gift thank-you wording can help you cover both in one note.

Thank you for funeral flowers

Sympathy flowers call for a short, gentle note from the family. Mention the arrangement and where it stood during the service, then say it brought comfort. You do not need to write more than that while you are grieving. Our funeral and sympathy thank-you wording has more examples, including printed acknowledgment cards.

Common questions

How do you say thank you for the flowers?

Name the flowers, say where you put them, and add one line about why they made you happy. Something like "the pink ranunculus are on my nightstand, and they were the first thing I saw this morning" says more than "thank you for the beautiful flowers" on its own.

Do you need to send a thank-you note for flowers?

Yes, at least a message. A text or call the day they arrive lets the sender know the delivery made it, and a card is a nice follow-up for a big arrangement, a business gift, flowers after a hospital stay, or flowers for a funeral.

What should I write if I do not know what kind of flowers they are?

Describe the color and what you did with them instead. The bright orange ones on my desk, the tall white stems in the hall, or the bunch I split into two vases all work. You can also snap a photo and send it with your thanks.

How do I thank someone for flowers at work?

Send a short email or card that names the occasion and where the flowers are now, such as the lobby or your desk. If a whole team chipped in, thank the group in one message and add a personal word to whoever organized it.

How do I thank a client or business for sending flowers?

Write a brief, formal note on company stationery or by email. Mention the flowers, where they are displayed, and the relationship you value, and sign it from a named person on behalf of the team.

How soon should I thank someone for flowers?

A quick text or call the same day or the next is ideal, since the sender may be wondering whether the delivery arrived. A written note can follow within a week or two. For funeral flowers, a few weeks is fine.

Is it okay to thank someone for flowers by text?

For a partner, a friend, or a just-because bunch, a text with a photo of the flowers in their vase is a perfect thank-you. For a grandparent, a client, or flowers sent during an illness or a loss, follow the text with a card.
