To thank people for anniversary wishes, write one or two sentences that thank them for remembering and mention something real from the day or the years behind it: the dinner you had, the old photo they posted, the year you were married. Reply within a day or two to texts and comments, and within a couple of weeks for cards, gifts and party guests. A single public post can cover most social media wishes.
When to reply
Texts and social media comments are easiest to answer the same day or the next, while the conversation is still fresh. Cards that came in the mail, gifts, and a party someone threw for you can wait a week or two for a handwritten note. If you missed the window, a reply weeks later is still welcome, as long as it opens with a short apology and gets on to the thanks.
One post or individual replies
On Facebook or Instagram, a single post thanking everyone is the gracious way to handle a feed full of wishes. Mention one detail from your day so it reads like you wrote it today. Then go back to the comments that were personal, such as the friend who was your maid of honor or the cousin who shared a photo from your reception, and reply to those individually. A like on the rest is enough. Family who texted you directly get a text back.
How to word a reply as a couple
When wishes were sent to both of you, reply as a couple. Keep the pronouns consistent (we, us, our) and sign both names on a card. If only one of you is writing, say so in a phrase like “Jonah is at work, so I am answering for both of us.” When a friend wrote to you personally about your marriage, answer in your own voice; it is fine to add that your spouse says thank you too.
Milestone anniversaries
For milestone years like the 1st, 10th, 25th (silver), 40th (ruby) and 50th (golden), let the number do some of the work: name the year, mention what has changed since the wedding, and thank the people who have been there for most of it. For a 40th or 50th, a note to the best man, maid of honor or anyone else from the original wedding is a lovely extra.
Gifts, parties and vow renewals
An anniversary gift gets its own note, separate from a general thank-you post. Name the gift and say where it ended up or how you used it; our wording for thanking someone for a gift has more ideas. After a party or vow renewal, thank each household that came, and write separately to the officiant, the hosts and anyone who traveled. If your children or grandchildren planned a surprise, tell them which part caught you off guard and what it felt like to watch them pull it off.
Thanking your spouse

Work anniversary replies
When colleagues mark your work anniversary in a team channel, on LinkedIn or by email, reply once in the same place. Thank them, mention one project or memory from your time there, and keep it to two or three sentences. If your manager sent a card or a personal note, a short reply to them directly is a good idea. Leave the private jokes and the salary talk out of it.
When the anniversary is a remembrance
The anniversary of a death brings a different kind of message, and the people who remember it deserve thanks too. A short text or card that says their message helped, and names the memory they shared, is all that is needed. You do not owe anyone an update on how you are coping.
