House-Sitting Thank-You Wording

Wording for the friend or neighbor who watched your house while you were away and gave you one less thing to worry about.

Edited by Michael KahnUpdated

Heartfelt

Dear Dominic, I cannot thank you enough for handling the water heater situation while we were gone. Dealing with a plumber and then staying calm enough to keep us updated was so far beyond what we asked you to do. You saved us. We owe you a real thank-you dinner when things settle down. With so much appreciation, Leah & Cory

Warm

Dear Robbie, Coming home to a clean house and zero disasters is the best possible way to end a trip, and that is entirely thanks to you. Knowing you were there let me actually relax and enjoy myself. Thank you for taking such good care of the place. With gratitude, Sasha

Funny

Hi Jordan, Thank you for watching the place. Everything is exactly where I left it, the plants are alive, and you somehow left it cleaner than I did. I am a little suspicious, mostly grateful. Cheers, Sam

Hey Priya, Thank you for house-sitting. I know our home comes with a needy thermostat and an even needier cat, so you are basically a saint. Thank you for surviving both. Gratefully, Maya

Formal

Dear Taylor, I want to say a proper thank you for house-sitting last month. You handled everything professionally, kept great communication throughout, and left the house in excellent condition. I would not hesitate to reach out again for future trips. Sincerely, Ms. Harrington

Short & sweet

Hi Isabel, Just a quick note to say thank you for house-sitting. Everything looked great when we got back, and the little gift you left on the counter was such a sweet surprise. We really appreciate you. Warmly, The Bakers

When someone looks after your home while you are away, a thank-you note that specifically acknowledges what they did, whether that was keeping things running smoothly, fielding an unexpected issue, or being a steady presence, makes it clear that their effort did not go unnoticed.

What you are thanking them for

House-sitting looks like nothing happened, and that is exactly the problem. The measure of a good sit is an uneventful return, so there is no visible achievement to point at.

Someone slept in a bed that is not theirs, took the mail in before it advertised an empty house, kept the heat at a level that protects the pipes rather than one that suits them, put the trash out on the right morning, and stayed reachable the whole time. Name one of those and the note stops being generic.

If you are stuck, thank them for the thing you did not have to think about while you were away.

When something went wrong while you were gone

This is the note people most often underwrite. A sitter who dealt with a burst pipe, a power cut, a break-in alarm, or a contractor who turned up unannounced did something well outside the arrangement, often while you were unreachable in another time zone.

Say plainly that it was beyond what you asked. Acknowledge the stress rather than only the outcome, because handling a household emergency in someone else’s house is unpleasant even when it ends fine. This is also the situation where a note alone is not quite enough. Offer something concrete: cover the costs they fronted, and add a dinner or a gift on top.

Paying, or not, when it was a favor

A friend or neighbor who sat as a favor is in an awkward position, because naming a price would have been strange for both of you. The note is where you settle it gracefully.

For a short stay, a warm note plus a decent bottle or a gift card is proportionate. For anything over a week, or a sit that involved mail, deliveries, plants, a garden, or a contractor visit, money is appropriate and is not insulting. Put it in a card rather than handing it over, so it reads as thanks rather than a transaction.

For a professional sitter, the equivalent of a tip is a written review. Say so in the note and then actually leave it. Referrals are how independent sitters get work, and a specific public review is worth more to them than anything you could wrap.

Sitters who also looked after a pet

Plenty of house-sits come with an animal attached, and the animal adds company, medication, walks, and worry to the logistics of the house. If your sitter did both, thank them for both, and be specific about the pet by name.

For wording aimed squarely at the animal side, see our pet-sitting thank-you wording.

Common questions

Should I pay someone who house-sits for me as a favor?

If a friend or family member house-sat as a favor, a thank-you note plus a thoughtful gift is a considerate way to show appreciation. Cash is always welcome if the stay was long or involved extra responsibilities like managing mail or receiving deliveries.

How long after they leave should I send a thank-you note?

Send it within a few days of getting home. Promptness shows that their effort is fresh in your mind and that you noticed the care they put in.
