Heartfelt
Dear Uncle James, Thank you for the generous graduation gift. It is going toward the security deposit on my first apartment in Chicago, which I sign for in July. You have shown up for every milestone since my first piano recital, and I am so grateful for you. With love, Cameron
Dear Grandma and Grandpa, Thank you for the gift to my college fund. Knowing that part of sophomore year is already covered takes a weight off, and I know how many years you have been saving for this. I will make you proud in the fall. All my love, Elena
Dear Grandpa Frank, Thank you for the watch. Knowing it was your graduation watch first, and that you wore it to your first day at the plant in 1971, makes it the thing I own that I will be most careful with. I wore it to my first interview last week. With love, Marcus
Dear Aunt Mei, Thank you for hosting my graduation party. You turned your backyard into a celebration for sixty people, and I know the dumplings alone took two days. It was a perfect afternoon, and I will remember it for a long time. With love and thanks, Lin
Dear Mom and Dad, Thank you for four years of tuition, care packages, late-night phone calls and the drive back and forth every break. I know what you gave up so I could be here, and walking across that stage was as much yours as mine. All my love, Sofia
Dear Michael, Thank you for carrying our family for the three years I was in nursing school. You did every bedtime on my clinical nights and never once complained about the flashcards on the fridge. I passed my boards, and half of this degree is yours. All my love, Danielle
Dear Dr. Wojcik, I am not sure I would have made it to this finish line without your encouragement during my junior year. Thank you for believing in my thesis when I was not sure I did. Your guidance shaped the way I think, and I will carry that with me. With deep appreciation, Cameron
Warm
Dear Mrs. Adeyemi, Thank you for the bookstore gift card. I have already spent part of it on the reading list for my first-year seminar, and the rest is waiting for a novel that has nothing to do with school. Warmly, Kiara
Dear Aunt Lucy and Uncle Ben, Thank you for the suitcase. It is already half packed for August, and it is the first piece of luggage I have ever owned that does not belong to my parents. I will bring it back full of stories at Thanksgiving. Love, Theo
Dear Mrs. Thornton, Thank you for coming to my graduation and for your kind words afterward. It meant a lot to look out and see you there, after all the summers I spent at your kitchen table with Emma. With gratitude, Cameron
Dear Grandma, Thank you so much for coming all that way to see me walk. Spotting your face in the crowd was the best moment of the whole day. Your love has always been a steady thing I could count on. All my love, Cameron
Dear Jenna and Rob, Thank you for coming to my graduation party and for the card. It meant so much to have the people who watched me grow up all in one yard. I will miss the neighborhood when I leave for Boulder. Thank you, Ava
Dear Ms. Delgado, Thank you for being my counselor for four years and for writing my recommendation. You were the one who told me to apply for the scholarship I thought I had no chance at. I got it, and I start at UC Davis in the fall. With gratitude, Jamal
Dear Pastor Ellis and the youth group, Thank you for the graduation blessing on Sunday and for the card signed by everyone. You have known me since I was in third grade, and it meant a lot to be prayed over before I leave. With love, Grace
Dear Mrs. Park, Thank you for the graduation card and your kind words. I remember reading in your class every afternoon in fifth grade, and it was lovely to hear from you again. Warmly, Noah
Dear Friends and Family, Thank you for celebrating Jordan's graduation with us. Seeing so many of the people who cheered him on since Little League in one place made us proud and grateful. Thank you for the cards, the gifts and the stories you shared. With love, Dana and Chris Whitfield
Funny
Dear Aunt Rosa, Thank you for the very generous check. I have been told it is responsible to save it, so naturally I am thinking about it very hard while it sits in my account. Thank you for believing in me anyway. Love, Devon
Hey Coach, Thank you for the card and the pep talk. Four years of you yelling helpful things at me finally paid off, diploma and all. I owe you one. Gratefully, Marcus
Casual
Hi Team, Thank you all for the group gift and the cake in the break room. Finishing my MBA while working here was only possible because you covered for me during exam weeks. I am lucky to work with you. Best, Cameron
Dear Aunt Jo, Thank you for my graduation present. I love the backpack and I will use it in middle school. It has a pocket for my water bottle. Love, Ella (8th grade)
Formal
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Horne, Thank you for your generous graduation gift and your kind note. I am putting it toward textbooks for my first semester at Ohio State, and I will think of you when the bill comes due. I appreciate you remembering me. Sincerely, Cameron
Dear Karen, Thank you for letting me leave early on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two years so I could finish my degree. You never made me feel like I was asking too much, and I am excited to bring what I learned back to the team. Sincerely, Felipe

A graduation thank-you note names the gift or the gesture, says what it will help you do next (rent, textbooks, the move, the new job), and thanks the person for their support along the way. Send it within two to four weeks, before you leave for school or work if you can. Do not mention the amount of a money gift.
What to write in a graduation thank-you note
Unlike most thank-yous, a graduation note comes with news. Telling the giver where you are going and how their gift fits into it (“the deposit on my first apartment in Chicago”) makes the note specific without any effort.
A simple order works for almost every note: thank them for the gift by name, say what you are doing with it, mention one thing about your next step, and close warmly. Four sentences is plenty.
Thanking someone for money or a gift card
Graduation gifts are often money, which makes the “what it is going toward” line essential. Name the purpose, whether it is a deposit, textbooks, a laptop, a car repair or the first month in a new city. If you plan to save it, say what you are saving for. For a gift card, name what you bought with it. Our cash and gift card thank-you wording has more.
For a contribution to a college fund or a 529 plan, thank them for the long view, since a gift like that often reflects years of planning.
Thank-you notes for party guests and hosts
If you had a graduation party, anyone who brought a gift or card gets a note. A relative or family friend who hosted, cooked or decorated deserves a separate handwritten note that names the work, because they gave a weekend or more. Guests who simply came can be thanked together, in a group message or a short card from the graduate or the parents.
Notes to parents, partners and the people who helped you get there
The people who made the degree possible often get no note at all, because they were not handing over a gift on the day. Write to your parents, a spouse or partner who took on more at home, a grandparent who helped with tuition, or a boss who adjusted your schedule. Name what they gave up, and tell them the diploma is partly theirs.
Teachers, counselors, professors and coaches who shaped you are worth a note too. Name the class, the advice or the recommendation, and tell them what it led to. Our teacher thank-you wording and professor thank-you wording have more, and if a scholarship paid part of the way, see scholarship thank-you wording.
High school, college and graduate school
High school graduates usually receive the most gifts and are writing thank-yous on their own for the first time. A parent can help with the list and addresses, but the notes should be in the graduate’s words and handwriting.
College graduates are often writing to people who have followed them for years. Mention the job, city or program that comes next.
Graduate school and adult learners often owe the biggest thanks to the people at home and at work who absorbed the extra load. A note to a spouse, children or an employer is more important here than a note for any gift.
Kindergarten, fifth and eighth grade graduations are smaller affairs. A parent writes the note, or helps the child write one sentence, for anyone who came or sent a gift.
When to send graduation thank-you notes
Two to four weeks after the ceremony or party is the usual window. If you are leaving for college or a new job, finish them before you go, because a box of blank cards rarely gets opened in a dorm room. A late note is still welcome; open with the thanks and skip the apology.
Common questions
How soon should I send graduation thank-you notes?
Within two to four weeks of the ceremony or party is ideal. If you leave for college or a new job soon after, write them before you go, a few each day, rather than letting the stack follow you.
Should I mention what I plan to do with a cash graduation gift?
Yes, briefly. Saying "I am putting it toward my first month of rent" or "I am saving it for my certification exam" gives the note a personal detail. Do not mention the amount.
Do I need to send a thank-you note for a graduation card with no gift?
It is not required, but a short note is kind if the card had a personal message or came from someone you have not heard from in a while, like a former teacher.
Do I send a thank-you to people who came to my graduation party?
Anyone who brought a gift or a card should get a note. For guests who simply came, a group thank-you from the graduate or the parents, or a short text, is enough. A relative who hosted or cooked should always get a handwritten note.
Should parents write the graduation thank-you notes?
The graduate should write their own notes for gifts, starting in high school. Parents can send a separate note thanking guests for coming to a party they hosted, and they write the notes for a kindergarten or elementary graduation, with the child signing.
Does a graduation announcement mean people should send a gift?
No. An announcement shares the news and does not oblige anyone to send a gift. If someone sends one in response, they get a thank-you note like any other gift.
Can I send a graduation thank-you by email or text?
A text is fine the day of the ceremony for friends who came. For money, gifts and anyone older, a handwritten card is the better choice, and it is what most relatives expect.
