A short thank-you message Personalize

A doula or midwife walks with you through one of the most vulnerable days of your life. A thank-you note tells them what their calm, their skill, and their belief in you did for you.

What to write to your doula or midwife

Be honest and emotional. Name what their presence gave you: the calm in the chaos, the advocacy when you could not speak for yourself, the sense that you were safe and not alone. There is no need to keep it short. The deeper and more specific your note, the more it will mean to someone who shared that day with you.

After a beautiful or a difficult birth

Births do not always go to plan, and a doula who stayed steady through a frightening one deserves to hear what that meant. Whether your birth was serene or scary, thank them for the part they played in helping you find peace with how your child arrived.

Postpartum support and the whole team

If a postpartum doula carried you through the blurry early weeks, thank them for the sleep, the reassurance, and the confidence they helped you find. And if a whole team supported your birth, a note to all of them thanks everyone who looked after your family on the day your baby came.

Common questions

What do you write in a thank-you card for a doula?

Speak from the heart and name what their presence meant, like the calm they brought, the way they advocated for you, or how safe they made you feel. Doulas share one of the most intense and intimate days of your life, so an honest, emotional note is exactly right. There is no need to keep it brief.

How do you thank your midwife?

Thank them for guiding you through pregnancy and birth with skill and warmth, and tell them about the moment they helped bring about. Midwives form deep bonds with the families they care for, so they are glad to get a heartfelt note, and a photo of the baby if you like.

Do you tip or give a gift to a doula?

Tipping is not expected, since doulas set their own fees, but a heartfelt note, a thoughtful gift, or a glowing review and referrals are all warmly received. Many families also love sharing a birth photo or a note months later about how the baby is growing. The relationship often continues well past the birth.

When should I send the thank-you?

Whenever you have the energy, which with a newborn may be weeks or even months later, and that is completely understandable. Doulas and midwives know exactly how those early days go. A late note is still welcome, especially with a baby photo tucked in.
