Heartfelt

Dear Grandma, Thank you for the birthday card and the check. It is going toward the used kayak I have been watching at the marina, and when I take it out for the first time I will send you a photo from the water. I loved the note you wrote inside about your own twenty-fifth birthday on the lake. With love, Noah
Grandparent (check) Personalize
Rafael, Thank you for the weekend in Mendocino. The cabin with the wood stove, the walk on the headlands in the fog, the breakfast you planned down to the jam: you thought of every hour of it. I keep the ticket stub from the Skunk Train in my wallet. All my love, Miriam
Partner (trip or experience) Personalize
Dear Owen, I am still a little stunned. Thank you for the surprise party, for getting my college roommates to fly in from Denver, and for keeping a straight face at dinner while forty people hid in the back room. The slideshow of my bad haircuts was a cruel and perfect touch. With love and a full heart, Rachel
Surprise party organizer Personalize
Dear Nell and Ravi, Thank you for the stack of board books for Penny's first birthday. She chews the corners of the farm one and then pats the cow page like she is saying hello. We will read them to her long after she stops chewing them. With love, Monica and Parker
First birthday (from parents) Personalize
Dear Mira, Thank you for the photo album you put together for my fiftieth. I had not seen the picture of us on the pier in Santa Cruz in thirty years, and I sat on the couch and turned every page twice. You gave me a whole life to look back on in one evening. With love, Rosa
Milestone, 50th Personalize
My dear family, Thank you for the dinner at the old Italian place and for the quilt with a square from every grandchild. I found the one with the lopsided sailboat and knew right away who made it. Seventy years old and I still cried at the table. All my love, Grandma Opal
Milestone, 70th and up Personalize

Warm

Dear Mom and Dad, Thank you for the stand mixer. I made the lemon cake from Grandma's recipe card the same night, and it was the first time it rose properly in my apartment oven. I will bring you a slice on Sunday so you can taste what you started. Love, Maya
Parents Personalize
Hi everyone, Thank you for the orchid and the card full of signatures. It is already on my desk by the window, and I have read the card more times than I will admit. Marcus, I hear you organized the whole thing while I was in the budget meeting, so an extra thank-you goes to you. Gratefully, Quinn
Coworkers (group office gift) Personalize
Dear Aunt Odette, Thank you for the birthday money tucked inside your card. I am putting it toward a proper winter coat before the first cold snap, and I will think of you every morning I walk to the train warm for once. Love, Malik
Aunt or uncle (cash) Personalize
Dear friends, Thank you for coming out to celebrate on Friday, and for the gifts I was not expecting at all. The board game, the hot sauce sampler and the framed photo from our camping trip are all in use already. Having you all around one long table was my favorite part of the year. Warmly, Paul
Gifts at your own party (group note) Personalize
Dear Mason, Thank you for coming to my third birthday and for the giant bubble wand. I ran around the yard with it until the sun went down, and I wanted to take it to bed with me. Love, Olivia (with help from Mom)
Kids' party guest (parent co-written) Personalize
Dear Molly, Thank you for the scarf you knitted me. I know how many evenings went into that cable pattern, and I can see where you switched to the second skein of green. I wore it to the farmers market on Saturday and two people asked where I bought it. Warmly, Nate
Handmade gift Personalize
Dear Dad, Thank you for the pasta-making class. Standing next to you at the counter, both of us covered in flour and arguing about how thin the dough should be, is what I will remember from this birthday. I am making the ravioli again for you next weekend. Love, Priya
Experience gift Personalize
Dear Auntie Marisol, Your package made it all the way from Lisbon in one piece. Thank you for the painted tiles and the tin of sardines with the wonderful old label. I hung two of the tiles in the kitchen, and it feels like a little piece of your city is here with me. With love across the ocean, Ophelia
Gift mailed from far away Personalize
Dear Poppy, Thank you for the sweater. The color is exactly the deep blue I always reach for, and I love that you thought of me when you saw it. It ran a little small, so I swapped it for the next size up, and it is now on its way to becoming my favorite thing to wear in December. Love, Natalie
Gift you will exchange Personalize
Dear Aunt Maxine, Thank you for the birthday gift and for remembering how much I love birds. The ceramic owl came with your note about the barn owls behind your old farmhouse, and that story made my evening. It was so kind of you to think of me. Love, Orla
Gift you did not love Personalize
Thank you to everyone who came out for my birthday on Saturday, and for the books, the plants and the very loud singing at the end. I am still smiling about all of it.

Funny

Pedro, You bought me a label maker. I have labeled the spice drawer, the junk drawer and, briefly, the cat. Thank you for feeding the problem you have been teasing me about since we were ten. Your organized brother, Oscar
Sibling Personalize
Dear Nora, Thank you for the slime kit. I made purple slime with glitter in it. My dog stepped in it and Mom laughed so hard. Thank you for coming to my party. Your friend, Ruben
Child's note, age 7 to 8 Personalize
Dear Raquel, Thank you for the reading glasses, the bottle of Advil and the card that said "welcome to forty." I laughed until I needed all three. For the record, I am wearing the glasses to read this note back to myself. Gratefully and slightly squinting, Nikhil
Milestone, 40th Personalize
Thank you for the birthday candle that smells like a bakery. My apartment smells like cinnamon rolls and I have eaten zero cinnamon rolls. This is a betrayal and I love it.

Hey Nadia, The hiking boots fit like I have owned them for a year. I wore them up Mission Peak on Saturday with zero blisters, which my old pair never managed once. Thank you for paying attention every time I complained about my feet. See you on the trail, Phoebe

Hi Riley, Thank you for the bookstore gift card. I spent a happy hour wandering the shelves on Saturday and came home with the new Ann Patchett and a field guide to backyard birds. Both are on my nightstand now. Thanks again, Naomi

Dear Uncle Quentin, Thank you for the set of art markers. I used the brush ones to finish my comic about a raccoon detective, and the colors don't bleed through like my old ones. I will show you the whole thing at Thanksgiving. Love, Reggie
Child's note, age 10 to 12 Personalize
Omar, Thank you for the record player for my thirtieth. I played the Fleetwood Mac album you tucked in the box three times in a row that night. Thirty sounds a lot better on vinyl. Cheers, Megan

Hey Nico, This thank-you is two months late, and I am sorry about that. I have used the pour-over coffee setup every single morning since my birthday, and I finally understand why you kept going on about bloom time. Thank you for upgrading my mornings. Thanks, Rhys

Dear Ruth, Thank you for the birthday lunch and the leather notebook. I have started using it for our Monday planning notes, and it makes the start of the week feel a little more deliberate. I appreciate you taking the time to celebrate with the team. Best regards, Mateo

Dear Peggy and Roland, Please forgive how long it has taken me to write. Thank you for the lovely birthday card and the gift certificate to the garden center. Write your own with the Birthday Thank-You Note Generator Free printable card (PDF)

A birthday gift thank-you note needs three or four sentences: name the gift, say how you have used it or what you thought when you opened it, and close warmly. Send it within a week or two of your birthday. If you are replying to cards, calls and posts rather than presents, our thank you for the birthday wishes wording covers those.

When to send a birthday gift thank-you

Write the notes in the first week after your birthday, while you still remember who gave what. If gifts piled up at a party, jot a list as you open them, with the giver’s name next to each item, so the notes are easy to write later.

A gift that arrived by mail deserves a quick message the day it lands, so the giver knows it did not get lost, followed by a card if the giver is a relative or an older family friend.

What to mention about the gift

The middle sentence carries the note. Say where you wore it, what you made with it, or what you will do with it next. “Thank you for the necklace, I wore it to dinner on Saturday and my sister asked where it came from” tells the giver their choice landed.

For a handmade gift, mention the work you can see: the pattern, the hours, the detail. For an experience such as a trip, tickets or a class, describe a moment from the day itself.

Thanking for money, checks and gift cards

You do not have to name the amount. Thank them for their generosity and say where the money is going: a coat, a trip, a savings jar, a specific item you have been watching. If you have not decided yet, say so and promise to report back. For a gift card, name the shop and what you bought or plan to buy. Our money and cash gift thank-you wording has more for checks and cash in a card.

Group gifts, office collections and party gifts

When several people chipped in, write one note to the group, name the gift and add a line for whoever organized it. At work, keep it a little more reserved than you would with friends, and post the card in the break room or send it to the team thread. Our group thank-you note wording covers notes signed by or sent to many people.

If you were given gifts at your own birthday dinner or party, you can thank everyone at once in a group message, then send individual notes to anyone who traveled, hosted or gave something especially personal.

Thank-you notes for a kids’ birthday party

Write the notes within a couple of weeks of the party, and let the child do as much as their age allows.

Ages 3 to 5: the parent writes the note and the child adds a drawing or their name. Sign it from the child “with help from Mom” or Dad.

Ages 6 to 9: a few short sentences in the child’s own hand. Ask them what they did with the gift, and have them write that. Writing two or three a day keeps it from becoming a chore.

Ages 10 and up: the child writes the whole note. A parent can address the envelopes.

Leave the spelling and the wobbly letters alone, especially on notes going to grandparents. For more on notes to them, see our grandparents thank-you wording.

First birthdays, surprise parties and milestone birthdays

A first birthday thank-you comes from the parents. Mention what the baby did with the gift, even if it was chewing on it, and sign it from the whole family.

For a surprise party, the organizer gets the longest note. Name what they pulled off: the guests they tracked down, the cover story, the cake. Guests who kept the secret can get a shorter line.

When a milestone birthday (30, 40, 50 and beyond) brings a sentimental gift such as a photo album, letters or a family dinner, say what it was like to receive it, and name a photo, a memory or a person. A little humor about the number is fine with people who will enjoy it.

Late notes and gifts you will exchange

A late note is still welcome. Give the delay one sentence, then spend the rest of the note on the gift and how you have used it in the weeks since.

If a gift is the wrong size or not to your taste, thank the giver for the thought and mention something true: the color, the story behind it, or the interest they remembered. You do not need to mention the exchange unless they would expect to see you wearing or using the item.

Common questions

How soon should I send a thank-you note for a birthday gift?

Within a week or two of your birthday is a good goal, and sooner is easier because the gift is fresh in your mind. If more time has passed, send it anyway with a one-line apology for the delay and then get straight to the thanks.

Do I need to write a note if I already thanked them at the party?

A thank-you in person is kind, but a short written note is still worth sending for gifts from relatives, older family friends, anyone who mailed a gift, and anyone who organized a party. Between close friends who see each other often, a warm text that names the gift is usually enough.

How do I thank someone for birthday money without mentioning the amount?

Thank them for their generosity and say what the money is going toward, such as a winter coat, a trip or a savings goal. Naming the use shows the gift mattered, and leaving out the number keeps the note from reading like a receipt.

How should a child write thank-you notes after a birthday party?

Keep each note to who it is for, what the gift was and one true thing about it. Children ages 3 to 5 can dictate a sentence and add a drawing, children 6 to 9 can write two or three short sentences themselves, and older kids can write the whole note. Leave the spelling and grammar alone.

What do I write when several people went in on one gift?

Address the note to the whole group, name the gift and say how you are using it. If one person organized the collection, add a line thanking them directly, or send them a separate short note.

What should I say about a gift I am exchanging or did not love?

Thank the giver for the thought and mention something you appreciated, such as the color, the story behind it or the fact that they remembered an interest of yours. You do not need to say you are exchanging it, and you should not pretend to love something you will not use.

Is a text message enough to thank someone for a birthday gift?

A text works well for friends, siblings and coworkers you talk to often, as long as it names the gift. For grandparents, older relatives and anyone who sent money or a gift by mail, a handwritten card is the warmer choice.
